Are you worried about your health? If you were to receive a health report card tomorrow – how do you think you would score? Would alcohol give you a good score or a bad score? The bad news is that alcohol is bad for health – what is it doing to your health?
Millions of people around the world do not look after their health, and this can involve smoking, drinking too much alcohol, poor eating habits and lack of exercise. The health report for people in this category is a definite fail.
The problem is that these people are not necessarily from poor societies, or suffer from lack of nutritious food, or lack health warnings about the risks of smoking and drinking too much alcohol. The people with a bad health report card are often those from wealthy populations, with enough money and education and food to avoid such a bad health report card.
But they continue to smoke, drink too much alcohol, eat a poor diet, and fail to get enough regular exercise.
Affluent societies around the world are reporting that overall health is improving due to the fact that we are living longer. Death rates are falling and chronic disease rates are reducing. But is this a true picture of our health? It just doesn’t seem right when we know that a large number of us continue to place our health in jeopardy with bad habits. Such as smoking, drinking too much alcohol and not eating healthy food.
It is true that many health threats have decreased. This results in the statistics showing that we are living longer and healthier lives. But the hidden statistic is the increase in the rate of development of cancer among the population. Cancer rates have climbed steadily despite the apparent increase in health. Cancer is now the overall highest killer across the western societies.
What is alcohol doing to your health? The top risk factors in the development of cancer are smoking, drinking too much alcohol, poor diet and lack of exercise. Sounds familiar?
A large proportion of the population is overweight or obese, many drink alcohol every day. And most people are too busy to eat healthy food. There is the problem with our modern society, and the increase of poor lifestyle choices. The things that are making us unhealthy are the things that our affluent society has added to lifestyle. We think we are improving our lifestyle, but many of the poor lifestyle choices are making us sick.
The rate of smoking uptake in most societies is steadily declining as the health risks and danger factors have become more widely understood. This is a generalization though. Some societies have rapidly increased in smoking rates in recent times. Advertising has unfortunately promoted the popularity of poor lifestyle choices.
Only around 20% of western societies avoid drinking alcohol, and therefore the majority of people do consume alcohol. As is typical once we have one glass of alcohol, our resolve weakens. And many of us are guilty of drinking too much alcohol.
Current medical advice provides us with guidelines in terms of what is considered a safe level to drink alcohol every day. The guidelines suggest that no more than 2 standard drinks of alcohol every day is a safe limit. But for many of us, drinking more than two standard drinks of alcohol every day could be affecting our health.
But the health card report suggests there are more problems out there. More than 90% of people fail to eat the prescribed amount of fruit and vegetable serves each day, and more than half of the population fails to get enough exercise.
If you think you are drinking too much alcohol, then you can be creating risk factors to your health. Drinking too much alcohol tends to affect other areas of our lives. Such as our attention to healthy eating habits, and especially our resolve to get more exercise. As we have discussed, there are definite links between the increased risks of developing cancer, and poor lifestyle choices.
But if you combine the risk factors such as obesity, and drinking too much alcohol, then the risks start to escalate. If this risk is further compounded by lack of exercise, and poor dietary choices. Then the risk factors for developing cancer can increase even further.
The problem is that when we drink alcohol every day. We tend to lose our resolve to exercise, we tend to care less about eating the right foods. The excess calories contained in our chosen alcohol just make the problem worse. And there is likely to be a substantial amount of excess calories in every drink.
It can be very difficult to lose weight and get more exercise. The number of calories that we consume when we drink alcohol every day can be far greater than what we can lose through diet and exercise.
Are concerned about what is alcohol doing to your health? If you resolve to avoid alcohol, then there are ways to stop drinking alcohol at home. Many people have decided to stop drinking alcohol by themselves. It can be a very safe and simple way to greatly improve your health.
