How to Avoid the Alcohol Trap

Are you stuck in the alcohol trap?  If you are like me, you will probably be shaking your head and denying that there is any problem with alcohol.  Like me, you probably think you can handle it and there is nothing to worry about.  Do you want to know how to avoid the alcohol trap?

The biggest risk from the alcohol trap is ability to recognize that the trap is waiting to snare you.  Sometimes we don’t realise that we are dangerously close to falling right into the jaws of the trap.  Not until you discover that you cannot stop drinking alcohol will you realise the full danger of drinking too much alcohol.  The problem is by that time it may be too late to avoid the alcohol trap.

Are you in danger?

The problem with alcohol is that it is the people who are at most risk of being caught in the alcohol trap are the ones who least recognize their own peril.  We know that drinking too much alcohol makes us feel bad, and we may be aware of the burden of guilt that is associated with drinking.  But after a couple of drinks, those feelings of worry and guilt are momentarily lifted, but unfortunately do not go away.

Instead, those same feelings that we are trying to avoid will always come back afterwards, to make us feel even worse than before.  That is a small example of the alcohol trap and how drinking alcohol just makes us feel bad.

Recognise the Danger

The problem with being caught in the jaws of the alcohol trap is that we are tricked into fighting against those who try to tell us we are trapped.  The only way we can overcome the urge to deny all guilt and blame is to strip away the fog surrounding the alcohol trap.  We need to see just how all-pervading and dangerous alcohol is, and how we can begin to avoid the alcohol trap.

If you wish to learn how to avoid the alcohol trap, then you firstly need to recognize the risk, you need to feel the negative aspects that alcohol has on your life, the impacts that alcohol has you and your family, and most of all you need to move away from denial.

It is not your fault!

Once you believe that the trap is real, at least you know what to fight against, and to recognise what the actual enemy looks like.  Please don’t shoot the messenger.  If a loved one has been trying to tell you that alcohol is a problem, then take up the fight against the alcohol trap that is trying to catch you.  That is the problem right there.

Be careful where you lay the blame.  The way to avoid the alcohol trap is to seek a better way, and to avoid blame.  It is not your fault.  Alcohol is a poisonous and insidious drug that is addictive and causes pain.  It is not your friend!

Does drinking alcohol make you happy?

Here are the cold hard facts:

  • yes – alcohol is a type of poison and it can kill you
  • believe it or not, alcohol is an addictive drug
  • alcohol is a psycho-active chemical that changes the way you think.

How can alcohol make you happy when it does these things to us all?

If you still have trouble believing me – I bet alcohol has let you down more than once.  I bet alcohol has caused you loss or pain.  I bet that alcohol has caused you regret and I bet that drinking alcohol makes you feel bad.

How can we be so mistaken into thinking that alcohol actually makes us happy?

To Avoid the Alcohol Trap, We need to change the way we think about alcohol

To change the way we think about alcohol means that we will have to try to understand why we have come to trust something that is so obviously bad for us.  Even though most people will swear otherwise.  Don’t believe me?  The wine making industry is actively promoting the health benefits of drinking wine.  But if I am not mistaken, wine has probably been responsible for many of the problems we are talking about.

We have to question our cultural conditioning towards alcohol.  We need to stop denying that alcohol is somehow different from all the other addictive drugs.

So we need to overcome our social acceptance of alcohol.  Just because it is such a common drug of choice in society does no mean that we have copy that behavior.  Only then will we be able to recognize the danger, and be able to avoid the alcohol trap.
